Dreams, Decades and Decisions

By Wanambwa M. Rogers

I have had the above title as a ‘one-liner’ in my notepad from January this year(first heard the whole thing from a sermon by Bsp T.D Jakes). I didn’t feel it was the write time to write about those subjects combined(I have written about them separately before on this blog).

You may wonder, what is a one-liner?

Well, a one-liner is basically a single line of thought that you come to, when you are ready to write. If you are a writer, I’m sure you have many of these. I have hundreds, some dating back over a year.

*if you don’t have or write one-liner, start today, they are a great pick up for your writing. I believe they are of great help as a reminder for many things even in daily life. The other I was going through my diary and saw that I wrote about a certain business, just a single line. But I got back to reconsidering it. It is viable now because of COVID-19 and the changes that have occurred, it wasn’t then.

So let’s talk about Dreams, Decades and Decisions

As a functioning person, you always have dreams(scientifically, we dream through out our entire sleep but forget almost all those dreams. Those are not the dreams I am talking about here) and it is these dreams that will drive your being throughout your life.

Now, what kind of dreams are we talking about here?

As a person that wants to get somewhere in life, you must have dreams(and inadvertently, a vision). They are what you envision your future to be.

The thing is, you must be specific on what you want your future to be. If you want to be rich, how rich are we talking about here? $1million, $25billion or just rich enough to cater for your family and live a comfortable life? In Africa, and most parts of the world, this can be achieved without being a millionaire in dollars.

Do you want to finish school, to what level? A wife(or husband), which type of wife/husband? How many children? Some people don’t even want to have children so it’s not a given that everyone expects them. Or do you just want to build orphanages to help the vulnerable in your village(country…)?

When do you want these things and people in your life?

Details, details, details.

“And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
Habakkuk 2:2-3 ” KJV

Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Outliers(which I’ll be reviewing on Monday) says that in order to reach that point of mastery in any field, one needs 10,000hours. As it may, this is around as long as a decade. Here we factor in the fact that you won’t spend 24hours doing one thing(for those numbers nerds like myself😊).

And so you’ll need to calculate your progress in decades if you want to see things work. When you calculate progress in a single(as many people do, with new year resolutions and so on), you’ll be dismayed with lack of progress!

Honestly, which endeavor ends in a year? School? Work? Marriage? Raising kids? You’ll realize that it is easier on oneself to see things in decades. That in the last decade for example, I personally, finished three levels of education(O’level, A’level and two courses at university), fell in love, was heartbroken, did several odd jobs, made friends, discovered my passion for writing, etc.

If it was just a single year, I may say I have achieved nothing! 2020,may be such a for many(not me, unless the God I believe in no longer works). But if we see things in decades, we’ll evaluate the overall performance in 2030.
So your dreams should be calculated in decades.

Now although we are writing down visions and dreams and looking at them in a decade long perspective, that doesn’t mean we’ll only do something or accomplish in ten years. Daily decisions have to be made, these turn into bi-annual and annual decisions. Which in turn, turn into 5-year decisions and so forth, till the end of the decade.

It is the overall sum of these decisions that will determine how much of our dreams come to pass after all the time and resources we invest in them.

Therefore, in conclusion I’ll say that although we should look at things in decades, our daily decisions affect the eventual happenings in our lives.
