Chicken

Since it’s Christmas, I guess it is an awesome day to talk about chicken, right? When it comes to the love of chicken, it unparalleled. It is in fact rare to find a meat eating person that doesn’t eat chicken; making it a lucrative business.

Global chicken meat industry consists of many different production levels including feed mills, hatcheries, growing farms, and processing plants. In 2017 there were 22.85 billion chickens worldwide. Chicken Farming as a Business in Uganda alone is estimated to have between 40 and 50 million chickens. Of these, at least 30 million are hybrids, while the rest are local breeds.

On a day like today(Christmas), a chicken will go for as low as Ugshs15,000 and as high as Ugshs50,000. For someone selling them, just 50 of them sold at Ugshs20,000 will give you a million shillings. Normally, they for between Ugshs10,000-20,000.

Of course you can decide to set up a KFC or Cafe Javas franchise and sell them on a daily at a good price of around Ugshs14,500 per piece(any piece of the chicken and considering you can on average get around 8 big pieces, this is good money).

Even your average restaurant will sell chicken at an average between Ugshs5,000-Ugshs10,000. Other restaurants are even more expensive than Cafe Javas.

We kept these birds as a family business for some time having an average of between 150-200 birds per season. As it is, you’ll use around Ugshs900,000-1million shillings in expenses on them and maybe a little extra Ugshs200,000 if you end up keeping them past selling date. This leaves you with a profit on average of Ugshs800,000. Here we are talking monthly. And by the way, this is a very small farm considering all our contemporaries in the business in the area had an average of 1500-2000 birds per season.
The birds can be kept in a small space and hence are good business.

So, either keep them and sell, buy them and resale at a profit, or set up a chicken restaurant(in Africa, they’re even sold along roads so you can take advantage of that too).

For now, let’s enjoy the festivities. Merry Christmas.
